Infrastructure Working Group builds and maintains the foundation of NAHC as a coalition while also forming a non-profit organization that is sustainable and ensures the work is designed for the future of our community. Our working group is accountable to the community, to NAHC, and to each other. Research and Relationship Collective builds bridges among NAHC members, the Native community, and allies through effective research, communications and genuine relationship building.
Native American Housing Circle recognizes that many large institutional sources of data and research under-represent Native communities and residents. Information from the study will be used to plan for housing programs and services, new affordable housing developments, and services for Native community members experiencing homelessness in the Metro Denver area. Members of NAHC reach out to unhoused relatives each quarter to provide critical resources and support.
Volunteers are also welcome to help sort and package donations and deliver to relatives living in the community. Referred to as a Tribally Designated Entity, or TDHE, the organization may be a department within the tribe, tribal housing authority with separate board of commissioners, or a nonprofit organization.
The entity designated by the tribe to receive HUD funds must comply with the rules and requirements of the program. The intent of the law was to provide federal assistance for Indian tribes in a manner that recognizes the right of tribal self-governance. Under the Indian Housing Block Grant, tribes self-determine the plan, design, construction and maintenance of affordable housing on Indian reservations and Native communities. The Office of Native American Programs administers the following six programs.
Eligible activities include housing development, assistance to housing developed under the Indian Housing Program, housing services to eligible families and individuals, crime prevention and safety, and model activities that provide creative approaches to solving affordable housing problems. The Section Program was created in to help increase Native access to homeownership by providing a guarantee to lenders on mortgage loans made to Native borrowers, including American Indian and Alaska Native families, Alaska Villages, Tribes, or Tribally Designated Housing Entities.
Section loans can be used, both on and off native lands, and for new construction, rehabilitation, purchase of an existing home, or refinance. Awarded under an annual competition, Indian Community Development Block Grants provide single purpose grants for housing rehabilitation, land acquisition, community facilities, infrastructure construction, and economic development activities that benefit primarily for low and moderate income persons.
The income figures on the chart establish the points you will receive for the first Need Ranking Factor based on Annual Household Income. Applicants with an annual household income exceeding percent of the federal Poverty Guideline are not eligible for the program. Please send your completed application to your local Tribal servicing office. The collection of HIP applications is a continuous process throughout the year.
The BIA has updated it's Housing Improvement Program regulations governing its Housing Improvement Program, which is a safety-net program that provides grants for repairing, renovating, or replacing existing housing and for providing new housing. This final rule is an important part of the Tiwahe initiative, which is designed to promote the stability and security of Indian families.
The final rule aligns the program with other Federal requirements, allow leveraging of housing funds to increase the number of families served and projects funded, and expedite processing of waiting lists for housing assistance.
